BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (10-5-2, 4-2-1 USAS) played USA South Conference rival William Peace (8-2-5, 4-1-2) to a 1-1 draw in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
With the result, Brevard will head to the USA South Conference tournament as the bracket's fourth seed. BC will host fifth-seeded Greensboro on Tuesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
It marks the third straight season that BC is headed to the USA South Conference tournament and the fourth consecutive postseason appearance for the Tornados.
The match signified Senior Day as 13 Tornado seniors - Brian Cardona, Scott Douglas, Riley Freeman, Noah Martin, Jesus Martinez,
Sam O'Callaghan,
Francesco Bonometti,
Trystan Wallace,
Luis dos Santos,
Giuseppe Real,
Christian Ramsey,
Miles Schafer, and
Agustin Onetto - were honored during a halftime ceremony.
In a hard-fought match on Saturday between two of the conference's top teams, neither team was able to take advantage in the first half. WPU recorded seven shots and BC registered six shots in the first half with five of the combined 13 shots on goal.
The Pacers seemingly had a goal midway through the first half, finding the back of the net. However, the goal was wiped off the scoreboard due to an offsides call.
Just four minutes into the second half, junior
Ryan Lynch ripped a shot past WPU's goalkeeper to ricochet off a defender and find the inside of the net. For Lynch, the NCAA-era leading scorer for Brevard, it marked the 12th goal of the year and the 19th in the career of the Charlotte, North Carolina native.
Lynch's go-ahead goal came off a well-placed pass by senior
Sam O'Callaghan. The assist gave O'Callaghan a team-best eight assists on the year and 15 assists in the captain's illustrious career.
Brevard protected its 1-0 lead for the next 28 minutes until WPU found an equalizer on a goal by Josh Rutland, assisted by Jorge Aguilar.
Tied 1-1, neither team could find a second goal over the final 12 minutes as the match concluded after 90 minutes in a draw.
Both teams had nearly the same amount of goal-scoring opportunities with the Tornados edging the Pacers 12-11 in total shots. The game was contentious at times with 33 combined fouls and five yellow cards.
BC's starting goalkeeper
Matheus Rossi played all 90 minutes, registering five saves with four coming in the first half. WPU goalie Tripp Kidd recorded three saves.
The two teams will now head to the USA South Conference Tournament with BC as the fourth seed and William Peace as the second seed.
The tournament consists of the top-six teams in the Conference and is set to begin on Tuesday, November 1. All tournament matches will be hosted by the higher-seeded team in the particular contest.
The top-two seeds receive first-round byes and will take on the opening-round winners in the semifinals on Thursday, November 3. The championship game will be played on Saturday, November 5.
Seeding for the tournament is determined by a point system. Each conference win is equal to three points while each Conference tie is equal to one point.
