CARY, N.C. - JP Suarti scored his first goal as a Tornado in the 12th minute off a Lucas Campos assist, while the Brevard defense withstood the host's strong attack - earning a shutout that gave the Brevard College Tornados men's soccer squad (4-5-2, 4-2-2 USAS) a key 1-0 triumph over the William Peace Pacers (7-4-2, 5-3-1 USAS) on Sunday afternoon.
Suarti placed Campos' through ball past the Pacer keeper in the low left corner of the goal, scoring the match's lone goal that proved to be the difference in the contest.
Brevard - led by senior goalkeeper Patrick Hall and a veteran backline - stood strong against a Pacer attack that fired a total of 19 shots in the match. Hall (4-5-2) stopped all eight shots that he faced on-frame for his second shutout of the season.
In total, the Pacers outshot the Tornados, 19-9 on the afternoon. William Peace won a total of seven corner kicks compared to Brevard's four, but the Tornado defense was unfazed en route to Brevard's fourth conference victory of 2019.
Brevard newcomers Campos, Pedro Herrera, and Suarti each tallied two shots to pace the Tornado attack.
Following Suarti's goal, William Peace fired seven-straight shots that were all turned down. Before the intermission, the Tornados returned the favor with three-consecutive shot attempts.
The Tornados kicked off the second half with three shots within the first five minutes. From that point, William Peace got off seven shots in a row - none of which found the back of the net.
After Brevard's Matthew Brethen let a shot off in the 85th minute that was blocked, the Pacers let two shots fly in the final minutes - both of which were wide of the mark. With 20 seconds left in the contest, WPU's Jose Garcia attempted the Pacers' last chance at goal. Garcia's shot ended up just wide of the mark, sealing BC's road victory.
Brevard currently sits third in the USA South West Division standings, trailing only Covenant College (11-2-1, 8-0 USAS) and defending conference champion Maryville College (9-5, 7-2 USAS) - who the Tornados defeated in emphatic fashion, 5-0 at Ives-Lemel Family Field on Wednesday, October 2.
The Tornados return home to conclude conference play with a five-match USA South homestand. BC's stretch of home matches begins with a contest against Averett University (5-9, 3-6 USAS) on Saturday, October 19 at 2 p.m.
