MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Brevard's hard-fought first USA South Conference win on Wednesday afternoon culminated with a thrilling golden goal by seasoned senior veteran Bry'Kendrick Moore.
The Tornados (2-8, 1-5) defeated Berea College Mountaineers (2-8, 0-5) 3-2 in overtime on the campus of fellow USA South Conference member Maryville College as a result of a Sept. 8 matchup that was postponed due to inclement weather.
Berea took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute thanks to a penalty kick by Issac Domenech following a BC foul in the box. Domenech tucked the penalty kick into the right corner of the net.
The Tornados would find the equalizer in the 23rd minute. Jose Vela gathered the rebound from Eric Lenhart's shot and drove the ball into the back of the net, tying the score at 1-1. Vela secured his first career goal on this attempt.
Just 14 minutes later, BC would strike again. Matheus Masukawa sent the perfectly placed cross from Greg Sellers past the goalkeeper, giving the Tornados a 2-1 advantage. This score marked Masukawa's third goal of the season, which leads Brevard.
The Brevard College Men's Soccer squad held a solid 2-1 advantage at the half. BC outshot Berea 14-6, keeping the pressure on throughout the first stanza.
Brevard and Berea were deadlocked for much of the second half, trading shots and field position constantly. The Mountaineers found the equalizer in the 82nd minute, as Austin Duff placed a ball over Hall from 15 yards out to tie the match at 2-2. This score would hold until the horn sounded, sending the match into extra time.
However, the match would not last much longer. Just 2:25 into the first extra time period, Moore would find the back of the net for the first time as a BC Tornados Men's Soccer player. Moore benefited from a loose ball that was recovered by Jose Sanchez. Sanchez then headed the ball to Moore, setting up a 1 on 1 with Berea goalkeeper Clay Sheaffer. Moore sent the ball past Sheaffer from seven yards out, giving the Tornados their first USA South Conference win of 2018.
"I'm glad that we were able to finish the match off early in extra time," stated Assistant Coach Juan Mascaro Jr. after the victory. "The guys worked extremely hard over the past two days and deserve this win."
"I'm always happy to contribute to the team," added Moore. "The boys fought hard all match and put us in a great situation. At the end of the day, I owe it all to the BC coaching staff, my teammates, and my mom and pop."
Head Coach Bob Winch's squad are currently in the midst of the team's longest road trip of 2018. The Tornados hit the road to match up with Averett University in Danville, Va. on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. before concluding their four-game road trip with a battle in Mesimmer, N.C. against Pfeiffer on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m.
