Tornados Pull Away for 7-3 Win in Season Opener

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (1-0) opened the 2023 season with a 7-3 victory over Randolph College (1-1) on Friday night at WildCat Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The win marks the program's first season-opening victory since the 2019 campaign when BC defeated Montreat College 17-10 on the road on February 6, 2019.

Sophomore attacker Drew Pond scored two goals and dished out two assists for four points in his Brevard College debut to lead the BC offense. Junior attacker Andrew McDonald added two goals, while Frankie Howard and Trystan Wallace also found the back of the net, while freshman attacker Henry Konsker scored and assisted in his collegiate debut. Graduate transfer Parker Corbett dished out an assist as well. Defensively, Max Dorman caused three turnovers while Jacob Gravely and Michael Peters each added two caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Hicks made nine saves while holding the WildCats to just three goals.

Brevard took advantage of its power play opportunities, going 2-for-5 in man-up situations while Randolph went 0-for-7. BC converted 20 of its 23 clear attempts, while the WildCats held a slight 34-32 shot advantage. Randolph won eight of the 11 faceoffs in the contest.

Howard opened the scoring for the Tornados three minutes into the game with an unassisted goal at the 11:40 mark in the first quarter. Randolph's Tyler Johnson answered back just three minutes later before Wallace and McDonald scored a pair of goals to close out the first quarter.

Pond continued BC's momentum following 14 scoreless minutes of action, as Konsker dished out an assist on a man-up opportunity to make it 4-1. Randolph answered back in under 10 seconds to cut the deficit to two goals at the halftime intermission.

McDonald capitalized on a man-up opportunity early into the third quarter, as the Tornados and WildCats traded goals to open the third period. After 10 minutes of scoreless action, Pond scored on Corbett's assist to push the lead back up to three goals, 6-3.

Konsker scored his first career goal with four minutes left to play, as the Tornado defense shut out Randolph in the fourth quarter to earn the 7-3 victory.

Brevard concludes its weekend road trip on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Ferrum, Virginia as the Tornados take on Ferrum College.
