Tornados Fall in Close Season Opener, 6-4, to Ferrum

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (0-1) opened its 2022 campaign under first-year Head Coach JD LeMay, as the Tornados fell in a low-scoring, defensive affair, 6-4, to Ferrum College (1-1) on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Andrew McDonald scored a pair of goals and tallied an assist in his Tornado debut, while Finnegan McCormack scored and assisted twice, and junior Trystan Wallace also found the score sheet.

Senior goalkeeper Devin McCarragher saved 15 shots to anchor the Tornado defense. Ferrum hauled in 47 ground balls to Brevard's 38, and held the Tornados to a 2-for-8 mark on man-up situations.

BC got on the board first, scoring in the first three minutes as Wallace put one in the back of the net. Brevard's defense was able to hold Ferrum scoreless through the rest of the period, as Brevard took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter.

Ferrum leveled the score with a goal two minutes into the second period, scoring in the first two and a half minutes before taking a 2-1 lead just two minutes later. Ferrum extended its advantage with a goal at the 6:58 mark in the second quarter, as the Panthers put together a 3-0 scoring run. Ferrum took a 3-1 lead into the intermission.

Ferrum extended its lead as Nathan Piggott scored his third goal of the game, giving the Panthers a 4-1 advantage early in the third quarter.

McDonald scored his first two goals as a Tornado in consecutive fashion, getting the Tornados back to within a one-goal deficit. The Panthers were able to get a goal back, taking a 5-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter proved very defensive, as both sides only managed one goal apiece. The visitors were able to pull away with the low-scoring 6-4 victory.

Brevard returns to action, facing Oglethorpe on Friday at 7 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
