BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Men's Lacrosse team (2-4) fell in non-conference play, 15-8, against the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears (4-1) on Saturday at Ives-Lemel Field on the campus of Brevard College.
Jackson McKaig highlighted BC's performance, recording a team-high and game-high four goals along with BC's only two assists. The Gainesville, Fla. native leads the USA South in points (35), goals (22), and is fourth in assists (13).
Starting goalkeeper Peyton Mooney (2-4) had a busy day in goal, tallying 22 saves on 37 Polar Bear shots-on-goal. The 22-save performance ties Mooney's season-high and career-high mark set on February 16 at Randolph College. The mark is tied for the third most single-game saves in BC program history.
Ohio Northern fired a barrage of shots throughout the afternoon, attempting a whopping 68 shots in total. This mark is the most single-game shots that a Tornado Men's Lacrosse team has ever faced in program history.
ONU, a side which featured over 50 players on Saturday, was led offensively by Anthony Pavone, who tallied a hat-trick of three goals.
Pavone got the first point on the board just 2:31 into the first quarter, putting the Polar Bears up, 1-0. Brevard responded quickly, as McKaig and Sam Duffie found the back of the net to give the Tornados a 2-1 lead.
This would prove to be Brevard's only lead of the contest, as ONU ended the first half with six unanswered goals, including a man-up goal to put the Polar Bears on top, 7-2, at the intermission.
ONU carried its momentum into the third quarter, scoring four more goals in a row to push its lead to 11-2 with 3:18 left in the third.
BC's McKaig ended the Tornados' scoring drought with a goal in the waning seconds of the third quarter, cutting ONU's lead to 11-3 after three periods.
The Tornados would not give up, however, outscoring the Polar Bears, 5-4, in the final period. Two McKaig goals alongside goals from Jack Shade, Hewitt Farr, and Sean Pratt helped BC down the stretch, but the Polar Bears would hold firm, prevailing by a final score of 15-8 at Ives-Lemel Field.
Brevard is set to return to action next weekend as they prepare for a USA South Conference road test against Methodist University (4-3) on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C.
