Hunziker Tallies Three Goals, Three Assists Versus Methodist

BREVARD, N.C. – Junior Kyle Hunziker scored three goals and added three assists, totaling six points, to lead Brevard to a 10-6 victory over Methodist on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Field. The victory keeps the Tornados perfect at home (4-0) as they improve to 4-2 overall.

Joining Hunziker with multiple goals in the contest were Hewitt Farr and Jackson McKaig, who tallied two each. Defensively, the Tornados got a solid outing from Xzavier Holmes-Copeland, who finished with 21 saves, Robert Kokal (10 groundballs) and Farr (five groundballs).

McKaig recorded the first goal of the game at the 13:53 mark after finding a crease in the Monarchs' (0-4) defense as he drove a shot past Clay Stevenson. Just over two minutes later, Hunziker doubled the lead on an unassisted goal. Brevard, which took six shots in the period, stretched its lead to 3-0 following a strike by Sam Duffie at the 5:52 mark.

After a scoreless first period, Methodist received its first goal of the game at the 14:34 mark of the second off the stick of Cade Crews. The Tornados retaliated when Hunziker found Farr at the 10:53 mark, upping the lead to 4-1.

Methodist tallied its second goal with 6:12 remaining as Bryce Kephart drove home a pass from Jack Bryan. However, Brevard kept its three-goal lead intact when Paxton Brown scored on a pass from Hunziker as the Tornados led 5-2 at the intermission.

AJ Mejia scored the lone Methodist goal of the third just over four minutes into the frame, cutting the Tornados' lead to a pair. McKaig battled through a tough Monarch defense to record his second goal of the game at the 7:15 mark, making for a 6-3 Brevard lead. Hunziker added the final goal of the frame with 31 seconds left, giving the Tornados a four-goal advantage through three periods.

Back-to-back goals by the combination of Farr and Jack Shade allowed Brevard to take a 9-3 lead at the 8:28 mark of the fourth. However, Methodist found its offensive rhythm and responded with three unanswered goals off the sticks of Ian Mastriani, Crews and Connor Glenn in succession to trim the deficit to three.

Hunziker drove home the final goal of the game, along the way providing Brevard with a four-point cushion, to complete the 10-6 win. The Tornados become the first team in five regular season games to reach double figures on Methodist.

Brevard now turns its attention to Ferrum, who the Tornados meet on March 10 at 1 p.m.
