MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Kyle Hunziker and Jackson McKaig scored four goals each, but Huntingdons trio of Kendrick Ballard (three goals), Adrian Harper (three) and Zach Barnhill (two) helped push the Hawks to a 13-12 overtime victory in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
Tied at 12-all at the end of regulation, with a man advantage due to a pushing penalty on Robert Kokal at the close of the fourth, Barnhill found Ballard for the game-winning goal at the 3:37 mark of the overtime session to move Huntingdon to 5-0 on the season.
The Hawks grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the first quarter behind strikes from Ballard and Jackson Schrampfer. Hunziker got Brevard (3-2) on the board on an unassisted goal, kickstarting a Tornado lineup that added scores from Hewitt Farr and Sam Duffie that resulted in a 3-2 advantage. Harper brought the contest to a deadlock with a goal with less than a minute remaining in the frame.
Huntingdon penetrated the Tornado defense and used strikes by Bryce Coates, Austen Saucier and Caleb Bohrer to forge in front 6-3 at the 6:49 mark of the second quarter. McKaig streaked past the Hawks' defensive setup and used a pass from Hunziker to trim the lead to two. Farr added his second goal of the half to make for a 6-5 Huntingdon lead at the intermission.
The two units combined for nine goals in the third period to bring the contest to a 10-all deadlock. Hunziker was the key to the Brevard offense with three goals, two of which came 55 seconds apart, while McKaig added two. Harper was the only player for Huntingdon with multiple goals.
Mac Puller opened the final fourth quarter with an unassisted goal at the 11:54 mark, but Jack Shade notched a goal for the Tornados 1:39 later to make for an 11-11 tie. Barnhill, on a pass from Harper, moved the Hawks back in front by one at the 6:26 mark. The tandem of Hunziker and McKaig kept Brevard alive as the Tornados tied the game at 12 on McKaig's fourth goal.
The Tornados return to the field on Saturday, March 3rd, when they host Methodist at 1 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Field.
