Solid Defense Moves Tornados to 3-1

BREVARD, N.C. – Strong defense combined with multi-goal performances by Hewitt Farr, Kyle Hunziker, Jackson McKaig and Sam Duffie helped lead the Brevard men's lacrosse team to a 12-4 win over visiting Randolph on Saturday evening at Ives-Lemel Field.

Farr, who netted a game-high three goals, made only four shots throughout the contest. He was joined on offense by Hunziker and Duffie, who contributed two goals and three assists apiece as they finished with five points. Also making an offensive impact was McKaig, who had two goals, one assist as the Tornados improved to 3-1 on the season.

Defensively, Brevard was led goalkeeper by Xzavier Holmes-Copeland, who finished the game with six saves. Robert Kokal led all Tornados with six ground balls, followed closely by Jack Shade (five) and McKaig (four).

Randolph streaked out to an early 1-0 advantage as Gage Tutko took a pass from Prince Charles and netted the game's first goal in four seconds. Brevard retaliated almost six minutes later when Shade netted an unassisted goal to tie the game at one. Hunziker followed with a goal of his own at the 8:19 mark before finding Paxton Brown on a pass in the crease to stretch the Tornados' lead to 3-1 with just over three minutes left.

Randolph found the back of the net with 1.6 seconds left in the first, trimming the Tornado lead to one, but Farr and Duffie scored one goal each in the second to provide Brevard with a 5-2 advantage at the intermission.

Brevard added to its halftime lead at the midway point of the third with goals by Farr and Duffie, which extended the lead to five. McKaig netted his first goal of the game at the 4:48 mark, following a pass from Duffie, and Hunziker added the final goal of the frame as the Tornados led 9-2. Randolph ended its 29:45 scoring drought with seven seconds remaining when Kadri Hearns found the back of the net.

The Tornados reached double figure goals for third time this season when Hunziker found an open McKaig, who drove home an up goal and gave Brevard a 10-3 lead. Joel Vacchiano scored his first goal of the season with 2:39 and Farr completed his hat trick over a minute later as the Tornados owned a 12-3 advantage. Charles came through with the final score of the contest with 1:21 remaining as Brevard improved to 3-1 for the first time since the 2015 campaign.

Brevard returns to action next Saturday when it heads to Huntingdon for a 5 p.m. contest.
