Birmingham-Southern Turns Back Tornados

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Peyton Taylor and Greg Wallace scored four goals each and teammates Davis Thompson and Carson Buckner added three apiece as Birmingham-Southern handed the Brevard men's lacrosse team its first loss of the season, 19-7, on Saturday afternoon.

The Tornados (1-1) were led offensively by the combination of Jackson McKaig (four), Kyle Hunziker (two) and Jack Shade (one). Both Hunziker and McKaig added one assist each.

The Panthers grabbed control of the game early, posting a 2-0 lead at just over the midway point of the first quarter, following goals by Bucker and Justin Dennis. McKaig drove home the first Brevard goal at the 5:58 mark, but Birmingham-Southern upped the advantage to 4-1 following scores by Wallace and Christian Englehart in succession.

McKaig again found the back of the net for Brevard, notching goals at the 3:04 and 2:26 mark of the first quarter, slicing the deficit to 4-3, before Wallace added his second goal of the frame as Birmingham-Southern led 5-3.

The Panther offense controlled much of the second quarter, using three goals by Taylor and one each from Buckner and Thompson to lead 11-5 at the intermission. Brevard's goals came via Shade and Hunziker, who scored on a pass from McKaig.

A six-goal third quarter, which included a pair from Wallace, allowed Birmingham-Southern to extend its lead to 16-6. The lone score for the Tornados came off the stick of Hunziker, who came through with an unassisted strike.

Thompson added his final goal of the contest at the 14:34 mark of the fourth which was followed by McKaig's final score of the afternoon. Birmingham-Southern took advantage of goals from Buckner and Carson to complete the 12-point win.

Birmingham-Southern's Matt Quill made seven saves in the contest, while Xza Holmes-Copeland made 11 saves for the Tornados.

The Tornados return to the field on Wednesday, Feb. 14, when they host Emmanuel at 4 p.m.
