Vikings Defeat Tornados in Day One of the Lon Varnell Classic

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Brevard College Tornados Men's Basketball team (1-2) competed in the first day of action at the Lon Varnell Classic hosted by Sewanee University on Friday evening. BC squared off with Berry College (2-0), falling by a score of 68-56.

Berry forced 20 turnovers leading to 23 points off turnovers. The Vikings utilized a 15-2 run to build their lead and withstood multiple comeback efforts from the Tornados.

Levi Lamb put forth a 20-point effort to lead Brevard. Lamb's 20 points tied the game-high, as he fired an impressive 8-of-11 (73%). The junior forward's 20 points were the second-highest scoring total of his career.

Cannon Lamb added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting to the Tornados' efforts, including a team-high six rebounds in the contest.

Demari Hopper was involved in multiple facets of the Tornados attack, recording eight points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Vikings were led by way of Elijah Hirsh, who finished the game with 20 points on –of-14 shooting, which included a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Berry enjoyed a 32-22 points in the paint advantage alongside shooting 13-of-17 from the charity stripe.

The Vikings held the lead for a majority of the contest, leading by as much as 21 (36-15) with 4:45 remaining in the first half.

However, Lee Burgess' squad was resilient and fought back multiple times in the contest. Facing a 15-point deficit at the end of the first half, the Tornados strung an 11-2 run to cut the Berry lead to 40-34 with 13:56 remaining in the second half.

Brevard managed to keep the game within striking distance for the remainder of action but was unable to string together another sizable run.

The Tornados will face off with host institution Sewanee to close out the two-day tournament on Saturday, November 17. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET.

BC will then venture back to the mountains of Western North Carolina for their long-awaited home-opener. The Tornados meet the Bruins of Bob Jones at Boshamer Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will mark the first time Brevard has faced Bob Jones in Men's Basketball.
