Brevard Pulls Out 81-73 Victory in Regular Season Opener

TOCCOA, Ga. – Head Coach Lee Burgess and the 2018-19 Brevard College Tornados Men's Basketball team (1-0) opened their regular season with an 81-73 victory over the Toccoa Falls Eagles (2-4) in non-conference action in Toccoa, Ga. on Friday evening.

Brevard opened its season up with a victory behind an impressive all-around performance form Qadhafi Turner who registered 17 points on 6-10 shooting (60%). Turner added a team-high four assists and a game-high six steals.

Three other Tornados added double-figure scoring on the night. Sophomore guard Demari Hopper added 11 points to the Tornados' efforts alongside three rebounds and three steals.

Junior forward Levi Lamb, the third leading scorer from the 2017-18 season, tacked on 11 points to go alongside four rebounds, four steals, and a game-high three blocks.

Seeing his first official action as a Brevard College Tornado, freshman guard Noah Lea led the way for the Brevard bench. The Durham, N.C. native recorded 10 points on 4-6 shooting (67%) to lead the BC bench.

Both other starters Cannon Lamb and freshman Joshua Wilson added nine points each to the BC efforts, while sharpshooter Malon Herron-Cuthbertson tallied eight points including two three-pointers in the victory.

BC jumped out to an early 14-3 advantage in the contest which it held until the 8:09 mark in the first half.

The Eagles held a slim advantage for the rest of the first half, taking a 44-39 advantage into the second half.

The Tornados stormed out of the locker room in the second half. Sparked by a 24-4 run through the first ten minutes of the second half, Brevard held a sizable advantage.

With the Tornados holding a game-high largest lead of 68-50, Toccoa Falls started a run of its own, as a 16-0 run cut Brevard's lead to only two points at 68-66.

The two sides battled tightly through the remainder of the contest, however, a late spark by the Tornados propelled them to victory.

The Tornados held many statistical advantages as a unit in the victory over Toccoa Falls. BC outshot Toccoa Falls from both the field and the three-point line, as well as committing six fewer turnovers. The Tornados capitalized on the turnovers that they forced (13), converting them to 26 points off turnovers.

Brevard will now turn its attention to the second of back-to-back games on the weekend. BC will match up with NCAA DI opponent USC Upstate on Saturday, November 10 at 4 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.

After their contest with USC Upstate, the Tornados look ahead to the Lon Varnell Classic hosted by Sewanee College on November 16-17. Brevard matches up first with Berry College on Nov 16. before squaring off with host Sewanee on Nov. 17.

The Tornados will return home to the Boshamer Gymnasium for their first home contest of 2018-19 on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
