Men’s Hoops Hosts William Peace, N.C. Wesleyan

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard men's basketball team looks to use momentum gained from a 79-78 victory over USA South West Division leader Maryville on Thursday evening this weekend when it hosts a series of games against William Peace and N.C. Wesleyan.

The Tornados (3-9) capitalized on JaMarquis Johnson 3-pointer from the left wing with 3.9 seconds remaining to emerge with the one-point victory over the Scots. In a back-and-forth game throughout the night, the two teams endured nine ties and six lead changes in the final 6:57 of the contest, with the biggest lead for both teams topping at three points.

While Johnson came through with the game-winning shot, senior Stevie Williams put together a clutch performance down the stretch, scoring eight of his 16 total points in the final seven minutes of the game, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line and 2-of-2 from the floor. Teammate Levi Lamb also added six points in that same span.

With his 16-point outing against Maryville, Johnson remains Brevard's leader in points (174) and points per game (14.5). While he is tied with Williams for made field goals (59), Johnson leads the team in 3-pointers (30) and total rebounds (51), while ranking second in 3-point field goal percentage (44.8%).

The Tornados open the weekend with a clash against William Peace on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Pacers enter the game with a 3-12 record and are on a three-game losing skid that includes setbacks to Methodist (64-48), LaGrange (76-73) and Huntingdon (75-62).

Four players are averaging double figures in scoring for the Pacers, including Tyson Sellers (12.5), Trey Bryant (11.3) and Camden Ferguson (10.7), who have all played in all 15 games this season.

Brevard quickly returns to the court on Sunday at 3 p.m. when it hosts N.C. Wesleyan at 3 p.m. The Battling Bishops, who face Piedmont on Saturday afternoon, are 7-7 heading into the weekend. N.C. Wesleyan has rattled off three straight wins, topping 90 points in two of those victories, downing Greensboro, Ferrum and Covenant in succession.

The Bishops are averaging 84.4 points per game on the season, hitting 433-of-899 (48.2%) from the floor as a unit.
