BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard men's basketball team wraps up a three-game in six-day stretch on Saturday when it squares off against Berea at 2 p.m.
The Tornados, in search of their first win on the season, faced Montreat on Tuesday and S.C. State on Thursday earlier this week. Brevard endured a 103-78 setback to the Cavaliers before suffering a 93-65 downing in Orangeburg. S.C.
In the exhibition outing against South Carolina State, Brevard's offense was led by senior Stevie Williams, who finished with 16 points after converting 6-of-13 field goals and 3-of-6 3-pointers. Williams capped off his solid outing with four assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Divese Carson also had a solid night offensively, scoring 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Teammate Shelby Parris came through with 11 points, due in large part to a 3-of-10 outing from the floor and a 4-of-4 evening at the free throw line.
The trio helped Brevard (0-4) finish 22-of-54 (40.7%) from the field, 10-of-24 (41.7%) from the free throw line and 11-of-15 (73.3%) in their second game against an NCAA Division I opponent of the season.
JaMarquis Johnson enjoyed his third double-digit performance against Montreat, scoring 20 points, as he took over the team lead in points (58) and points per game (14.5). The sophomore has knocked down 50 percent (21-42) of his field goals and leads Tornado shooters from beyond the arc (7-19, 36.8%).
Defensively, the Tornados have made their presence felt with 18 blocked shots this season. Williams and Levi Lamb lead the unit with four each, while Markese Lynch (three), Bergen (three), Johnson (two) and Parris (two) have multiple swats as well.
Berea (3-3), playing their third game since Dec. 2, suffered losses to Covenant (93-64) and Kentucky Christian (91-89 OT) in succession. The Mountaineers, averaging 80.8 points per contest, are led individually by Torell Carter (20.6 ppg), Dyonta Bizzle Brown (15.6), Dakota Mays (13.0) and Travis Hadyn Roe (13.0).
The Mountaineers are shooting 46.6 percent (157-of-337) from the floor, while knocking down 29.4 percent (30-of-102) from the 3-point line. The biggest advantage for Brevard comes in the paint, where they have a 243-178 rebounding edge over the opposition.
