Tornados Make Final Preparations for S.C. State

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard men's basketball team will play its second game in a five-day stretch on Thursday when the Tornados trek to Orangeburg, S.C. to clash with South Carolina State in an exhibition contest at 6 p.m.

Brevard (0-4) is looking to get on track after suffering a 103-78 setback to Montreat on Tuesday evening at Boshamer Gym. The Tornados were led the trio of JaMarquis Johnson (20 points), Cannon Lamb (13) and Stevie Williams (11).

Johnson enjoyed a solid outing, hitting 7-of-12 from the field to go along with a pair of 3-pointers, while Williams collected seven points from the charity stripe. In 16 minutes off the bench, Cannon Lamb finished 4-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Another key cog in Brevard's lineup was Jakob Bergen, who emerged with five rebounds, five assists and four points in 24 minutes.

With his third double-digit performance in as many contests, Johnson took over the team lead in points (58) and points per game (14.5). The sophomore has knocked down 50 percent (21-42) of his field goals and leads Tornado shooters from beyond the arc (7-19, 36.8%).

Defensively, the Tornados have made their presence felt with 18 blocked shots this season. Stevie Williams and Levi Lamb lead the unit with four each, while Markese Lynch (three), Bergen (three), Johnson (two) and Shelby Parris (two) have multiple swats as well.

South Carolina State (1-8) enters the game on a two-game skid after suffering losses at N.C. State and Presbyterian College. The Bulldogs are led on offense by the duo of Donte Wright (12.9 ppg) and Damani Applewhite (11.2), who have scored 116 and 101 points, respectively. They lead the way for a S.C. State offense that has managed to hit 212-of-557 (38.1%) from the field this season.

Applewhite has also made his presence felt in the paint, leading the team in both total rebounds (55) and offensive rebounds (18).
