Brevard, N.C. - Brevard College announced on Thursday afternoon that Mark Prosser has resigned his position as Head Coach of the Men's Basketball program. Prosser has accepted a position at Winthrop University and will be serving as the top Assistant Coach of their Men's Basketball team. The announcement will be made in Rock Hill, S.C. later today.
"I've enjoyed every day walking into Boshamer Gymnasium and walking into that office. It's a wonderful place with great people, staff, student-athletes, faculty and staff," said Coach Prosser. "I wouldn't trade this experience for anything in the world. I loved my time here at Brevard and our young men. They worked very hard for me, they go to class and are about the right things, and they are building something very special here."
Prosser will be joining the staff of new Winthrop Head Coach Pat Kelsey, who comes to the Eagles after serving as a former assistant coach at Wake Forest, and an associate head coach at Xavier University. Kelsey, a former Xavier team captain, spent eight seasons at Wake Forest (2001-2009) under the late Skip Prosser and Dino Gaudio and two years on the staff at Xavier (2009-2011) under Chris Mack.
"It's a very personal decision, joining a staff with Coach Kelsey," added Prosser. "There isn't another coach in the country I would do that for. Pat and my father had a great relationship as Pat first played, and then coached with my father, and it is something I need to learn more about, and get to know that part of my father that he was able to experience."
During his time with Brevard, Prosser led Brevard to a 5-23 record in 2011-2012 as the Tornados finished ninth overall in the South Atlantic Conference standings. Highlights from the season include Brevard's road win over NCAA Southeast Regional finalist Anderson University, and the Tornados setting a new single game mark in team field goal percentage, hitting 66.0 percent of their shots against Mars Hill College on February 11th.
Under Coach Prosser, Brevard also set new school single game records with 27 offensive rebounds on January 4th against Carson-Newman, and tied the school record with 12 blocked shots in a single game on February 22nd against Newberry.
"I've enjoyed being a head coach and enjoyed my time at Brevard College," said Prosser. "This team shows a lot of promise with a good group coming back next year. They represent the school and town very well, and they've bought into a system of success that transcends the coaching staff. The players are going to play very hard for the next coach and they'll be successful here because they refuse to accept anything less. I'm going to enjoy being a witness to that, albeit from afar now, but I know that I was a part of their growth and I hope to continue to be a part of this community for a while."
