In high school, Gouveia lettered three times in basketball, in addition to being the centerpiece of Wai’anae football’s state titles in 1977, 1978, and 1980.

Lightly recruited on the island, Gouveia decided to attend college on the mainland, playing for College Football Hall of Fame coach and innovator LaVell Edwards at BYU. In his junior year, Gouveia served as a one-man wrecking crew, amassing seven sacks, 21 quarterback hurries and forced two forced fumbles en route to a perfect 13-0 record and the 1984 National Title.

A Butkus Award finalist his senior year, Gouveia went on to play in the Hula Bowl and was drafted by the Washington Redskins. In his 13 NFL seasons, Gouveia played in 184 games, making 73 starts, accounted for 819 tackles, 10 interceptions, eight forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered.

His biggest achievement on the field came as he captured two Lombardi trophies with the Redskins with Super Bowl victories in XXII and XXVI. He would famously go on to play alongside fellow Polynesian legend, Junior Seau, as part of the San Diego Chargers linebacking corps.

After his playing career ended, Gouveia returned to the island under then head coach, June Jones. After two seasons of student coaching, Gouveia would travel to NFL Europe to get his alternative pro coaching career started fine tuning his craft and gaining more responsibility.

He eventually settled in Mooresville, NC where he was named Lake Norman High School’s defensive coordinator. The allure of working with Denny Green was up next, working two seasons in the United Football League while also spending time as part of the FBU football camps. He eventually returned to the Hawai’i Warriors as linebackers coach before coming to Brevard College where he gets the rarest treat of all in this profession: coaching alongside his son Jeron Gouveia-Winslow.
