BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard football team looks to halt its two-game losing skid on Homecoming weekend when the Tornados square off against Virginia-Lynchburg at Brevard Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
The Tornados (1-4), hosting their second home game in as many weekends, will look to get off to positive start in their first October contest of 2017. Brevard is 7-39 all-time during the month of October since making the transition to NCAA play in 2007, the second-most victories in any month for the Tornados behind September (11). A victory over Virginia-Lynchburg would snap a 16-game losing skid in October, which dates back to Oct. 19, 2013, which began with a 43-24 victory by Wingate.
Despite a 38-10 setback to Huntingdon last weekend, quarterback O'Shay Carter led the way for the Tornado offense with 183 yards through the air as he finished 18-of-31 passing. Along the way he became the first Brevard quarterback in its 11-year NCAA program history to pass for at least 100 yards in four straight contests.
Carter, who took over under center for the Tornados against Emory & Henry (Sept. 9) ended the game against the Wasps with 172 yards. He followed up a 277-yard passing performance against Greensboro College (Sept. 16), the second-most passing yards in the program's NCAA history, before emerging with a 237-yard outing against LaGrange (Sept. 23).
Carter hit eight different Brevard receivers against Huntingdon, including Xavier Brown who finished with six for 73 yards. Nazayah Brown and Jarkevius Hopkins each netted 39 yards on the ground as Brown has the longest run from scrimmage (28 yards) on the afternoon.
The Tornado offense ended the game with Huntingdon on a positive note, as Carter picked apart the Hawk defense to cap off a four-play, 56-yard drive with a six-yard strike to Tyler Gregory. Carter completed four-of-five passes during the drive, hitting Rikiya Bain on a 15-yard strike, for the lone Brevard touchdown of the game.
The combination of Jason Nieradka (13 tackles; six solo) and Jinsly Jhon (nine tackles; seven solo) led the way for the Tornado defense. Johnathan Tucker was also active for Brevard, with eight tackles, as the team recorded 73 stops in the contest.
