BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College football team kicks off its 2017 season this weekend when it squares off against Davidson on Saturday at 7 p.m. The meeting with the Wildcats not only marks the first between the two programs, but also the first time since becoming an NCAA program that Brevard has competed against a team that currently competes in the Pioneer League.

Saturday evening's contest, which will take place at Davidson's Richardson Stadium, marks Brevard's 11th campaign since joining the NCAA in 2007. The Tornados are 2-8 in season openers dating back to the 2007 season with the two victories coming against Edward Waters in 2009 and 2010.

First-year head coach Bill Khayat and his staff will look to mirror the start by the 2009 Brevard unit, which opened with a 51-6 victory over Edward Waters—the first of five straight victories for the Tornados. Brevard finished 7-4 that season and outscored its opposition 174-49 during the five-game winning streak to open the campaign.

However, that task will be daunting in 2017 due in large part to opening against an NCAA Division I program with a Brevard roster that is comprised primarily of newcomers.

After the completion of preseason camp, junior quarterback Ryan Jordan earned the starting nod under center from Khayat. Jordan, a transfer from Cumberland University, leads the way for a unit that faced a roster overhaul after the reclassification to NCAA Division III.

Khayat heads into the season opener with a 76-man roster that includes 51 freshmen, nine sophomores and nine juniors. The Tornados have 19 returnees from 2016, nine of which made starts over the course of the season.

The 2017 Brevard roster consists primarily of individuals from three states—North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

The Tornados have 29 players hailing from North Carolina, while the second-most athletes come to Brevard from Georgia (19). Modzelle Atkins, who serves as Assistant Linebackers Coach and Equipment Manager, is the primary recruiter for southern and middle Georgia.

Assistant Head Coach Eric Gallon, who works primarily with the running backs, along with Special Teams Coordinator Luke Jaicks were also busy on the highways recruiting 16 Tornados from the Sunshine State.
