Cycling Coaches Race Through the Summer

Brevard N.C. – Brevard College Cycling Coaches Brad Perley and Cypress Gorry have had a busy summer competing in various events around the country.

Perley and Gorry wrapped up the Brevard College Cycling Season in May, leading Hannah Arensman and Janelle Cole to the USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Since then, the coaches have been putting their own bikes to use, placing first and second at the Stump Jump in Spartanburg, SC on June 24. Gorry finished the 3 lap race in a time of 1:53:57.7 with Perley right on his heal with a time of 1:53:58.3.

Coach Perley has competed in many races around the Southeast this summer, turning in many top-5 performances. The head coach stood at the top of the podium at the North Carolina Elite Category 1 Cross Country State Championships in Mayodan, NC. He also finished first in the cross country race at Fire Mountain, hosted in Cherokee, NC. To round out his races, Perley finished 3rd overall in the Haute Route 3-day Road Racing Event in Asheville, NC and 4th place at the SERC Finale cross-country mountain bike race in Helen, Ga.

Since the summer began, assistant coach Cypress Gorry has hit the trails, competing in both the Pro Cross Country Tour (Pro XCT) and the Off-Road Series. Both series of races are considered the premier cross country racing opportunities in the United States. Gorry currently stands at 5th place overall in the Pro XCT standings.  The Brevard Alum has turned in top-10 performances at the Missoula Pro XCT (2nd), Soldier Hollow Pro XCT (5th), and Whiskey Off-Road (6th).

"I have been happy about how my season has been going this year overall" stated Gorry. "I am really looking forward to Nationals in Snowshoe."

Coach Gorry is wrapping up his season, but not before competing in the Pro XC National Championships in Snowshoe, West Virginia, July 16 – July 22.  After that, Gorry will travel to Canada for the World Cup at Mont Sainte Anne.

At the conclusion of their race schedule, the coaches will return to Brevard to begin to prepare the Tornados Cycling Team for another successful year, kicking off the Mountain Bike season with a race at King University, September 1-2.
