BEREA, Ky. – Brevard senior hurler Drake Black tossed a complete game six-hitter and struck out 17 Mountaineer batters as he picked up his second win of the season with a 5-3 win over Berea on Saturday.

Black., who faced 36 Mountaineer batters, allowed three runs (two earned) and two walks as he improved to 2-7 on the mound this season. He received offensive support from Joseph Nelms and Christian Ezzell, who drove in two RBI each.

Brevard, which snapped a 12-game losing streak with the victory, had five batters finish with multiple hits including Beau Shealy (3-4, RBI), Mikey Mejias (2-5), Tyler Timms (2-4, two runs, double), Ryan Roon (2-5, run) and Jonte Wilkes (2-5).

The Berea bats got to Black early in the game as Nathaniel Siu led off the game with a double into right centerfield. A wild pitch moved Siu to third and after a Ryan Blevins walk the Mountaineers had runners on the corner for Nicholas Bot, who delivered a run scoring single. Bot stole second and advanced to third on an error at third, which also plated Blevins as Berea moved in front 2-0.

Two batters later Devin Bellev dropped a single into centerfield, scoring Bot, for the final Mountaineer run of the inning.

Brevard rallied in the second when Roon reached first on a single to centerfield. Timms reached base on an error at short, moving Roon to third in the process. Nelms connected on a double that brought home home both Roon and Timms, trimming the margin to 3-2.

After a three-up, three-down inning by Black, the Brevard offense picked up where it left off with a single to left by Shealy to open the third. Jadon Wooten and Donny Carsillo were both hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a double play by Berea prevented Shealy from scoring and got Wilkes at first. Ezzell kept the inning alive with a single to center, scoring Carsillo and Wooten to move the Tornados in front 4-3.

Ten strikeouts over the next four innings by Black kept the Berea bats at bay as Brevard maintained its one-run lead. In the top of the eighth the Tornados added an insurance run when Timms led off the frame with a double into right. Nelms followed with a walk and Mikey Mejias laid down a bunt single to advance Timms to third.

Shealy came through with a single to right, scoring Timms for the fifth run of the game.

Black fanned four Berea batters over the final two innings to preserve the win.

The Tornados return to the diamond to face Berea in a doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 18.
