Brevard drops series opener to Cobras 5-0

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Friday proved to be the battle of the pitchers as the Brevard College Tornados (10-31, 3-16 SAC) fell 5-0 to the Coker College Cobras (20-18, 10-12 SAC) as senior Kyle Pittman (Monroe, N.C.) hurdled eight-innings, while Forrest Arnold threw nine-innings on one hit baseball.

Senior Parker Hubbard (Salisbury, N.C.) supplied the Tornados only hit of the game, doubling to right field in the top of the ninth.

For the Cobras, Clint Allen led the way, going 3-3 from the plate, while Bryson Conner and Tanner Crosby each added a pair of hits, as Crosby tripled and Conner swiped a base.

Pittman took the bump for the Tornados going the distance as the lefty allowed five-runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out seven batters. Despite the loss, Friday marked the second-straight game that the Monroe, N.C. native has gone at least seven-innings.

Arnold (5-2) took the mound for Coker, as the righty kept the Tornados at bay, pitching nine-innings of scoreless baseball, scattering one hit and one walk, while striking out six batters.

Coker got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI ground out to shortstop that scored Conner.

The Cobras added one more run in the bottom of third to take a 2-0 lead when Darius Coldiron singled up the middle, scoring Allen.

Coker tacked on two more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 lead, as five runs would be all Arnold needed as he kept the Tornados off the board for just the third time this season.

Brevard will look to claim the series victory tomorrow as they return back to the diamond for a double header with the Cobras, with first pitch of game one beginning at 1 p.m., followed by game two around 4 p.m.
