NEWBERRY, S.C. - After falling to the Newberry 15-1 in game one of Saturday's conference doubleheader, the Brevard College Baseball team (6-13, 2-4 SAC) battled back to take the final game of the three-game series 7-3.
Game 1: Brevard 1 - Newberry 15
Newberry's hot bats did not slow down from Friday night, as the Wolves erupted for 15 runs in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Brevard's only run came in the eighth inning as freshman Donny Carsillo (Waxhaw, N.C.) singled to left field. Wyatt Farrior (Decatur, Ala.) would bring Carsillo in later in the inning. Carsillo finished 3-4 to lead the Tornados. Brevard finished with eight hits in the game.
Four Tornados' pitchers saw action in the game Teke Scudder (Cornell, Ill.) earned the loss, throwing the first three innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, and striking out three batters. Tyler Timms (Williamston, S.C.) came on in the fourth inning. Kross Robinson (Morganton, N.C.) tossed the sixth and seventh innings surrendering two runs on three hits. Matt King (Hartsville, S.C.) closed the game allowing one hit.
Estridge earned the win for the Wolves throwing seven innings, giving up six hits and no runs.
Game 2: Brevard 7 - Newberry 3
Senior Tyler Konzen (Orlando, Fla.) had an impressive outing for the blue and white, throwing all seven innings, surrendering just three runs on seven hits and striking out six batters. Senior Blaine Durham (Westfield, N.C.) supplied the offense for the Tornados finishing 4-4 from the plate and driving in four runs. Catcher Brayden Morris (Pulaski, Va.) drove in two runs on one hit for Brevard.
The Tornados reached the scoreboard in the top of the first as Durham singled to left field to score Donny Carsillo, who singled in his first at-bat, for the first hit of the game.
The Wolves answered in the bottom of the first, posting two runs as Olenchuk hit a two-run homer over the right field fence. Newberry would maintain the one-run lead until the fourth inning.
Durham led off with an infield single to start the fourth. Konzen would double through the left side to advance Durham to third. Morris would bring in Durham the next at bat. Senior Parker Hubbard drove in Konzen with a single up the middle to help Brevard regain the lead.
Konzen shut down the Wolves the next two innings. Newberry would add a run in the sixth as Totherow came around to score the Wolves' final run of the game.
Brevard tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh for insurance, as Durham launched a three-run homer down over the right field fence to score Schuyler Martire (Pine Bush, N.Y.) and Cam Dotson (Brevard, N.C.) to help the Tornados capture the win and improve to 2-4 in conference play.
Brevard will host St. Andrews on Tuesday, March 7, for a nonconference game at 2 p.m. The Tornados will travel to King on Wednesday for a single game beginning at 2 p.m.
