BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Athletic Department has announced a partnership with BoxCast that will provide a live video stream of dozens of home athletic contests in the coming year.
Brevard’s Athletic Media Relations staff will continue to provide live statistical coverage of athletic events, and the duo of Rick James and Chuck Dunbar are slated to broadcast Brevard football and basketball on 1240 AM WSQL and online, giving Brevard fans more options than ever before to follow along with the action.
“The ability to stream events is an absolute game-changer for us,” said Athletic Media Relations Director Randall Stewart. “We’re now on an even playing field with the other schools in the South Atlantic Conference and our region. I personally am absolutely thrilled to be able to bring this option to our fans and give our student-athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills before a wider audience.”
Brevard is partnering with BoxCast on the streaming project, a Cleveland, Ohio-based company specializing in providing affordable video solutions to athletic departments, churches, and special event organizers. BoxCast’s primary product offering is a BoxCaster, a small device with video, audio, and Internet inputs that eliminates the need for a dedicated streaming video computer and other costly equipment.
Current plans call for football, volleyball, and basketball home games to be broadcast, with the possibility of streaming select games from other outdoor sports based on weather and other considerations. Scheduling conflicts will be resolved by reviewing several factors, including whether an event is against a conference opponent, postseason implications, and available bandwidth.
The WSQL radio broadcast of football and basketball games will be synced to provide fans viewing the live stream with commentary. For these events, the start of the broadcast will coincide with the beginning of the radio pregame show and will continue after the game until the radio broadcast has ended. Broadcasts for volleyball matches, as well as events in any other sport, will begin approximately five minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
Fans will be able to watch a free standard definition stream of each event or can opt in to a high-definition broadcast for $4 per volleyball or football game and $6 for a basketball doubleheader. Brevard also plans to stream the WMYA telecast of both televised football games and a televised basketball doubleheader this season, ensuring that fans outside the local WMYA viewing area can still watch each televised contest.
Fans may purchase a Season Ticket that will give access to every game of a specific sport in high definition. A Football Season Ticket will cost $20 while a Volleyball Season Ticket is a discounted $30. Basketball Season Tickets, which allow HD viewing of both women’s and men’s games, are available for a discount rate of $60.
Additionally, Brevard is partnering with BoxCast to become the company’s first client to introduce an All-Sport Pass. Fans purchasing this option will have access to a high definition stream of every Brevard broadcast this season in any sport, including broadcasts of sports for which a Season Ticket is not available. All Sport Passes are available for $100 each.
“BoxCast has been extremely willing to work with us to create affordable packages for our fans,” Stewart remarked. “They’ve made it easy to watch a high quality stream whether someone is a passionate fan of one sport, of all of our teams at Brevard, or is only looking to view a single event. And with the option to watch for free in standard definition, we think our fans will be absolutely thrilled with all of the options.”
In addition to games shown online and locally on WMYA My40, various Brevard teams will be featured three times on ESPN3 throughout the fall season. South Atlantic Conference foe Wingate recently became the first Division II school to sign an exclusive campus-wide streaming agreement with the online network. Brevard’s football game with the Bulldogs on September 19 will be shown on ESPN3, while men’s and women’s soccer will each have their match at Wingate featured on the network on October 10.
“Having the opportunity to for our games to be streamed is not only great for Brevard fans, but also for the student-athletes from other countries or from across the country whose our parents don’t have the opportunity to watch our games,” said Aleksandra Vrvilo, an Oregon native who was named to the preseason second team all-conference volleyball team as a libero. “My parents will love the chance to watch our team play in our home gym.”
