2019 Brevard College Athletics Hall of Fame Class Announced

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College has announced the selection of Jeff Campbell (Cross Country/Track & Field) and Coach Michael Jones (Men’s Basketball) as the 2019 inductees into the Brevard College Athletics Hall of Fame.  Campbell and Jones become the 37th and 38th inductees into the college’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

The 2019 class will be officially inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, October 4 in conjunction with the Brevard College Distinguished Alumni and Faculty ceremonies as part of this year’s Homecoming schedule.

“We thank the Athletics Hall of Fame committee for their diligence in this year’s selections,” said Myranda Nash, Director of Athletics. “Jeff and Coach Jones are both fantastic choices to represent this year’s Hall of Fame class.”

Campbell, a 1991 graduate of Brevard College, won the NJCAA individual national championship in the 10,000 meters and helped lead BC to the 1990 NJCAA Cross Country National Championship.  He later went on to a successful running career that included competing eight times for Team USA’s World Championship team, seven IAAF World Championships, and two Olympic trials in the marathon.  Campbell also was a three-time USA World Cross Country Championship team member and a four-time member of the USA World Half-Marathon team to go along with competing for Team USA at the Pan Am Games.

Campbell has remained in the running industry where today he works as a Regional Specialty Sales Representative for ASICS America. In addition to Campbell’s selection into the Brevard College Athletics Hall of Fame, he was also elected into the University of South Alabama’s Athletic Hall of Fame in June of 2017.

“It is an incredible honor to be selected as an inductee into Brevard College's Hall of Fame,” said Campbell.  “Through Brevard's running program, I was able to train with some of the best college runners in the country at the time.  Coach David Rinker's guidance helped me grow as an athlete and pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of doing.”

“I owe a lot to Coach Rinker, my teammates and the entire faculty at Brevard College, for instilling in me a strong work ethic in both academics and athletics, added Campbell.  “This allowed me to set and achieve my goals throughout the rest of my running career and beyond.”

Jones served 12 years as the Head Coach of the Brevard College Men’s Basketball team beginning in 1999.  He won 175 games as Head Coach of the Tornados, including four seasons with 20 or more wins and three trips to national tournaments (NAIA and NCAA DII).  In 2009-10, Jones guided Brevard College to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament en route to being named the SAC Coach of the Year.

In total, Jones led three teams to national tournaments, guiding the Tornados to the national stage in 2000-2001, 2001-02, and 2009-10.

In his tenure at Brevard, he mentored ten All-Conference performers and maintained a 98 percent graduation rate for his program.

Jones later became Head Coach at Tusculum College and is currently the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Easley High School in Pickens County, South Carolina.

"I couldn't feel more honored to be selected,” said Jones. “My tenure at Brevard was very special and I was so blessed to have had a great group of wonderful young men that represented myself, our program and Brevard College so well over those 12 years."

Campbell and Jones will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Gallery of Distinguished Alumni & Faculty and Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner to be held on Friday, October 4 at 6 p.m. at the Porter Center on the campus of Brevard College.
